The Overcoat is the Coolest Jacket for the Winter

Updated: Jan 9, 2020

Why an Overcoat May be the Right Move for You

Winter is here. Feels like it pulled up just as fast as Arya Stark did, on the Night King during the final battle (Cleary I miss the show). Nonetheless, 'tis the season for outerwear. Like any other item in your closet, certain coats work better than others in specific scenarios. My question is, which jacket can be used in multiple arenas, thus providing you with more value?

There's a good number of things to consider, when it comes to rockin' a great winter coat. Things like, the type of coat (leather, bomber, trench, puffer), the style, the color, the fabric, etc. While I agree each of these characteristics are important, understanding how you'll move about town each day in it, should bear more weight on why you'll wear it. For an example, let's say you enjoy hanging out at local bars, typically wear the color black and dig chrome jewelry accessories. Investing in a leather jacket or peacoat could fit the bill well, right? Choosing to start with where you're headed and what you'll be doing, automatically helps with figuring out what coat to wear.

As seasons change, so will styles and in return you may find yourself looking for a different type of jacket. This season, the Overcoat could be your starting player. Also known as, the topcoat, trench coat, commuter coat, it's a staple in a gents closet and should be invested in. Why is it a staple for your closet? Each winter season, you'll find yourself pulling this coat out for a fit. It practically goes with everything. You can dress it up for a formal setting or dress it down to be casual. It keeps you warm and can layer over other jackets. Many overcoats carry special features and are built to function very well in bad weather conditions. Essentially, it's the coat for the season.

To further my case about the topcoat, below are five different looks that you can use as inspiration to give your overcoat game some new tricks:

Overcoat with a Roll Neck Sweater

This is a timeless look. The combination of the coat paired back with a black roll neck sweater makes it fresh. Adding in a pair of black distressed denim and a quality pair of black Chelsea boots, tie it together like laces to a knot.

Overcoat with a Hoodie

It's hoodie SZN! But for real though, overcoats are great jackets to use with a hoodie. One way to create a fresh outfit using a hoodie, is by wearing a cool contrasting color in reference to the jacket. For example, if you have a tan topcoat, consider wearing a navy-blue hoodie. The colors contrast well and make for great style.

Overcoat with a Suit & Tie

Layering a suit with a nice trench coat sets the style bar high when you enter a room. You're instantly letting others know that you've got a great style and a confident presence. Throw on a nice pair of leather gloves and the drip is complete.

Overcoat with Flannel Pants

Flannel pants are dope. If don't know, now you know. Doesn't matter if they're a tapered pair or a larger one. Like flannel pants, different overcoats offer cool fabrics. The contrasting fabric of both the pants and coat make for something cool when paired together. Going monochromatic (if your coat allows for it) is a great way to style it too!

Overcoat with Denim Shirt

Ah yes, the denim shirt. Easily another staple in a man's wardrobe. Rockin' this shirt with a crisp overcoat is saucy. For style options, consider bottoms like jeans, joggers or cargo pants. Each work well with the shirt/overcoat combo. I also like trainers in this scenario. It makes for a fresh fit!

Okay, I've presented my case and displayed the evidence. Hopefully, after reading this you feel like the overcoat is in fact, the coat of the season. If not, you can at least agree that it has a solid place in a man's wardrobe. Should you be in the market to purchase a topcoat for your wardrobe, consider beginning with a tan or black color. They'll provide the most variety when it comes to styling looks. Once you've acquired either of those, if you'd like to add an additional coat, consider picking up a check (windowpane), tweed or herringbone option.

Alright, that's my time good sir. March into the frigid winter season, with added style confidence. You've got just the right coat, to get the job done.
